Three Tests
Semen Detection
ASKS: IS SEMEN PRESENT?
Tests a stain to confirm the presence of semen. Results are positive or negative. Tested per spot, but doesn’t say whose.
Advanced DNA Extraction
ASKS: Whose DNA IS ON IT?
Pulls DNA from an item and builds a genetic profile, and can show when more than one person’s DNA is present.
Reference Profile:
ASKS: IS IT MINE / A KNOWN PERSON?
Builds a DNA profile to compare and test against the profile found on the item. Can be a cheek swab, toothbrush or another item.
Which test fits what you’re dealing with?
Semen detection confirms what the stain is. Your cheek swab tells you whether it’s yours. If it isn’t, there’s another man’s DNA on it.

Getting the Clearest Answers
How you handle the item matters as much as the test. DNA breaks down with heat, time and moisture. These steps give the lab the best possible change at a definitive result
-
Washing removes most DNA. Set the item aside as soon as you notice it and send it in quickly.
-
Plastic traps moisture and can ruin a sample. If the item is damp, let it air dry first.
-
Wear gloves if you can, hold it by the edges, and keep it away from other laundry so DNA doesn’t transfer.
-
Without one, the lab can say DNA is there, but not whose. A reference turns a “something is definitely there” into “it’s definitely his/hers.”
-
Underwear, sheets, clothing, and similar fabric items are most common. For references, a cheek swab works best; a toothbrush or razor also works.
-
Some items don’t hold enough DNA to build a profile. The results usually explain what was found.
